Sadly, not all ring stretchers are equal !
One of my most disappointing purchases was a “Ring Stretcher” through one the popular web-based purchases. This is not a criticism of eBay Sellers, however, there are some who do bring in products that are not worthy of a place in any ring crafter workshop.
Many of these units are knock-offs of quality tools manufacturer’s look and method of use, but this is as far as the comparison goes. The reduction plates can be of a poor standard (The unit I purchased had a double-sided plate; a feature that increased the cost of the unit, however, to flip the plate you had to remove the ram anvil so that you had enough clearance just to lift the plate out). The plate was also chromed but after only a few uses the chrome lifted and started to flake. Finally, the unit used a 4spline system to stretch the ring and it quickly became obvious that this severely marked the inside of the ring. The adage, “you only get what you pay for is most apt.”
A recent search revealed a 6spline stretcher only (no reduction system) along with the same product I originally purchased. If you do read the reviews most reflect the qualities of the actual seller and not the product. If I were to go down this road again, I would only purchase a product that had been reviewed by several users.
That said, I got a bit peeved by the plethora of knock-off products that I decided to purchase from a genuine Manufacturer/Designer and ordered a newly refreshed Pepetool’s Ring Stretcher. Yes, by comparison it is expensive, but that is a negative point, it’s the only one you mark against the tool.
Pepe have responded to user comments and developed a unit that is truly manufactured to a high standard and performs flawlessly. It is a “chalk & cheese” comparison. They look similar, but the Pepe is a precision tool that is just smooth to use in every respect.
We do not directly import Pepetools, but the tool is so good I sought out and partnered with another importer.
