Learning from failures

Some simple solutions

Tiny flaws in the coin’s metallurgy when stretched during folding or sizing can and do fail catastrophically. That sound every ring crafter dreads.

There are some simple procedures you can do. First, always deburr the hole you punched or drilled through the coin.

While deburring you should see a clean ribbon of material coming off the coin as you form a chamfer on the inner edge of the coin (A good deburring tool will have ‘High Speed’ steel blades). Check your efforts. The chamfer should look smooth and shiny. That is, no chatter marks! Second, just to be certain take a small piece of sandpaper and polish the chamfer. (Wet & Dry paper packs)

I find you the 150 Wet&Dry does this task the best. You should only see a clean smooth edge. Any marks (fine groves) running across this edge will tear and crack while you are folding the ring.

Thirdly, use a ring holder. A ring holder just gives you that extra control you need. The holder is also handy if polishing the inside of the band.

(NB: We are still trying to source a Ring Clamp at a price point that we can pass on the benefits to our ring crafters)
